A video and dance party honouring gay and lesbian bars that were once the heart and soul of Toronto’s queer community.
These now-vanished places—some short-lived, others decades strong—were more than nightlife spots: they were vital sanctuaries of connection, resilience, and joy. From the St. Charles Tavern (1950s to 1987) to lesser-known haunts, these bars played a pivotal role in shaping queer identity, health and culture in the city.
The devastating loss of lives during the AIDS crisis in the 1980s and ‘90s, urban gentrification, Covid-19, and social media have all contributed to their disappearance.
Occupying the very street where it was once dangerous to be openly queer, this project revives this legacy for just one night.
“Disappearing Acts” is a tribute and a reminder of where and why we gathered, what we’ve endured, and how these lost places helped shape our communities.
